Cervical Disc Herniation: Potential Result of Bellevue Car AccidentAs a Washington Car Accident Lawyer and Seattle Motorcycle Accident Attorney, perhaps the most common Seattle Personal Injury that I work with are neck and back injuries. The sudden, severe impact of a car accident can dislodge the intervertebral discs of the spinal column, causing intense pain throughout the body. These intervertebral discs are designed to cushion the spinal vertebrae from receiving the constant impact of everyday motion. When the disc moves from its original position, it can cause the vertebrae to rub together or it can pinch the spinal nerves. Both of these results are extremely painful, but result in different symptoms. Grinding vertebrae cause severe pain in the neck or immediate area of the disc herniation. The other common result is the distorted disc exudes pressure on the nearby spinal nerves. These nerves provide feeling to most of the body, so effecting one nerve in the neck can lead to resulting pain and/or limited feeling anywhere from the face to the arms or legs.
For severe pain to occur, the disc does not need to be completely out of position. A slight deviation from the normal position can impinge the nearby nerves because they run so close to each other. Cervical disc herniation can occur from a variety of causes, both natural and external. A car accident in which the victim sustains a whiplash injury or other neck injury can be enough to push the discs out of place. Most treatments address the symptoms of the disc herniation, rather than the problem itself.
