Slipped Disk/Herniated Disk

As a Seattle personal Injury attorney, I have seen the effects that auto accidents can have on the body. With more than six million car accidents occurring in the United States every year, severe personal injuries are very common. In fact, car accidents are the leading cause of acquired disability nationwide. One injury that occurs very often in Washington auto accidents is a ruptured disc, also known as a herniated disc or a slipped disc.

When a vehicle is rear ended, it can experience a substantial impact. This jolting motion from the collision can contort the spinal cord and lead to severe injuries. The spinal cord is composed of many bones called vertebrae that are cushioned by small sponge-like discs. These discs act as buffers between the bones in order to keep the spine flexible. When a disc in the spine is ruptured, it may bulge in an unnatural direction or even break open. Ruptured discs occur most often in the lower back, however sometimes, discs rupture in the neck and occasionally the upper back.

When the ruptured disc bulges, it may consequently rub up against nerve endings resulting in pain, numbness and weakness in the injury area. If a ruptured disc does not press up against any nerves, the symptoms may simply be a back ache or no pain at all. If there is severe pain, then resting for a couple of days may help, but be sure to stay active after recovery as too much rest could weaken the muscles and worsen the injury. Heating pads and warm showers are also encouraged to relieve pain. In order to restore mobility to the affected part of the body, perform stretches and exercises recommended by a medical physician. Mild cases are normally healed with weeks, but more severe cases can last up to a few months.

Auto accidents can cause severe injuries that can last a life time. If you have been a victim in an auto accident, read my FREE book: The Truth About Washington Auto Accidents.
