As a Seattle wrongful death attorney I know that speed limits are placed for the protection of everyone on the road. According to RMIIA, in 2008 car accidents were the leading cause of death among teens with about 2,739 deaths between the ages of 15 and 20. Adding speeding with the unpredictable driving habits of teenagers can be a very dangerous combination. The Government Census reported that in Washington alone there were around 492 traffic fatalities. Of these fatalities, 208 were a direct result of a car crash caused by speeding.

According to King5.com, on October 24th just after 2p.m, a fatal crash left one teen dead and two others with intensive injuries. In Marysville, Washington, a car full of teenagers was speeding near the Marysville School’s Getchell Campus when they lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. The driver, Juan Mendoza who was a student at Bio Med Academy, was killed instantly while the two passengers, Lars Kundu and Andy Vavrousek,  were airlifted to a local hospital. One of the student also attends Bio Med Academy and the other a student at the School for the Entrepreneurs. The passengers are reported to be in serious to critical condition at the hospital. The incident is still being investigated by the police but speeding is thought to be the main factor. The Marysville Getchell school will provide grief counselors on their campus throughout the week to help teens cope with the sudden loss of a fellow student and pulling for the recovery of the other two students.

Driving is a privilege that young people are so eager to possess but often do not take seriously. As a Seattle car accident lawyer I know that following the rules of the road is important no matter what age you are. It is imperative that we educate teenagers on the dangers of negligent driving. Speeding and distracted driving is potentially life threatening behaviors that can be taught correctly before obtaining a license. We should all take a lesson from this tragic story and follow all safety traffic laws.
