11 Year Old Student Hit By Truck In Crosswalk in Oak Harbor, Washington | Seattle based Serious Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Lawyer

It is always a little surprising when a car or truck hits a pedestrian crossing the street in a crosswalk and causes injury, but it is an all to common event in the Seattle area. At about 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, 11-year-old Alex Snellman was walking to North Whidbey Middle School in Oak Harbor. As he was crossing the street at a crosswalk, a 1985 GMC truck hit Snellman. Snellman was then immediately taken to Whidbey General Hospital and soon after was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to treat his serious injuries. Snellman is in serious condition and suffered a fractured clavicle and a broken femur.

Like many accidents we see during this time of the year, the road conditions during the accident were dark and overcast. The driver who hit the boy told police officers that he was unable to stop in time, resulting in the officers investigating whether or not the man will be charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian.

Dark, overcast and wet road conditions should be enough reason for individuals to drive cautiously. Those factors plus being in a school zone mean you need to be as alert and attentive as possible as there will probably be many students, like Alex Snellman, walking to school. Especially during hours when children will either be going to or coming from school. Not being able to stop in time is not a valid excuse, people must drive safely in order to prevent endangering lives and causing serious injuries like those sustained by Snellman.
