As the number of cell phone users and hand held internet devices increases, the more opportunities there are for drivers to be distracted from the road. I’ve been a Seattle car accident attorney for many years and have come to realize that the dangers of distracted driving are more serious than ever- around 6,000 fatal auto accident in 2008 were caused by distracted drivers. Among the causes for these accidents were drivers changing the radio station, driving without two hands, text messaging, talking on a cell phone, and eating.

On Wednesday, December 8th, three people were injured in a car crash that is suspected to be a result of distracted driving. Just after 7:00pm, a 17-year-old girl from Snohomish was driving southbound on Highway 9 in a 1997 Toyota Avalon. Her vehicle struck the curb and turned into the northbound lane and the Toyota collided with a 2003 Suzuki Aerio coming from the other direction. The Toyota then hit a light pole, which fell on top of the Suzuki. The 17 year-old driver of the Toyota was transported to Harborview Medical Center. 37-year-old Chi Ho from Bothell and 18-year-old Katherine Brown from Snohomish, which were the occupants of the Suzuki, were taken to Evergreen Hospital. None of the three victims in the accident appeared to be seriously injured.

The consequences of a being distracted for a just a few seconds can cause serious injuries and fatalities. Sadly, these accidents do not only affect the distracted driver- they often seriously injure or kill innocent bystanders. This accident proves why talking on cell phones, texting while driving and other forms of distracted driving are so dangerous.
