Air Bags Prevent Kidney Failure Research Shows | Kent Personal Injury Lawyer
Working with victims of severe Seattle auto accidents as a Bellevue personal injury attorney I have seen the horrible injuries that car accidents can inflict. Not only are facial lacerations, whiplash, and broken bones common in auto accidents, serious car accidents can also lead to damage of internal organs which is often times life-threatening. According to a new study by Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, however, seat belts may not only benefit accident victims in preventing traumatic brain injury and other life-threatening injuries, they may also help protect the Kidneys from severe injury. The Harborview Injury Prevention Research Center study reviewed data from 2,864 people involved in severe car accidents between 1996 and 2008 that had suffered kidney trauma. According to the data, those involved in auto accidents in a vehicle equipped with air bags were 45% less likely to experience kidney trauma from the accident. In fact, 7.5% of those without front airbags suffered kidney injury compared with only 3.4% of those with front air bags. Front airbags offer the most protection to the kidneys, but side airbags also appear to offer a level of protection when they actually deploy. The study does note, however, that only 33% of those involved in the study were wearing seatbelts. The use of seatbelts may either decrease or increase the chance of kidney complications. Also, in the majority of cases the vehicles side bags failed to deploy which may also may have an effect on the number of kidney injuries. Kidney injury is sustained in an auto accident when the body hits the armrest or door panel causing blunt trauma to the renal area. This can result in reduction in the functionality of the kidney or even kidney failure – which will hinder your body’s natural ability to remove toxins and regulate blood-oxygen levels. You may be involved in a serious auto accident at any time so please be cautious on the roads and always remember to buckle up and make sure your airbags are turned on.
