Road rage is one of the most destructive mentalities to have while driving a car, and it can be caused in all kinds of ways. With social media networks becoming so widely used, our interactions on sites such as Twitter and Facebook can greatly affect our mindset while driving. As a personal injury attorney in Seattle who has a Facebook account for both myself and Straight Talk Law, I understand how useful and even addictive social networking sites may be. As was seen last July, though, our communications over this site can lead to tragic outcomes.

A woman has been sentenced in a Michigan car crash that came about after a Facebook feud. Torrie Emery, 23, and Danielle Booth, 20, had a dispute on the social media site Facebook over a prison inmate’s affection. The two had exchanged heated messages over the site, which soon turned violent after Emery saw Booth in a car and decided to pursue her. Emery pursued the vehicle, driven by Alesha Abernathy, at 90 mph and rammed into Abernathy’s vehicle forcing Abernathy to run a red light in order to flee. While running though the light Abernathy was struck by a vehicle and killed.

Booth suffered permanent injuries in the auto accident and Emery’s 3-year-old daughter who was in the car at the time of the chase is now in foster care.

Emery was charged yesterday, pleading no contest to the second degree murder of Alesha Abernathy and received a sentence of 18 to 60 years in prison.

Over the course of my 10 years as a Bellevue injury attorney, I have seen how outside issues can turn violent when cars are involved. If there is one lesson to be taken from this incident, it is that automobiles can be very dangerous when used in an angry manner. Our communication on social media sites can have a large effect on our mood, so always try to clear your head of any anger before getting in your car. If you have suffered a serious injury as the result of an auto accident read my book “The Truth About Washington Auto Accidents” it will help you understand your rights, learn how to deal with the insurance company and help you decide whether or not you need an attorney for your case.
