Being a Seattle native I have grown accustomed to the tremendous amount of rain we receive every winter. The high levels of rainfall create dangerous driving conditions as puddles build up on the freeways leading to hydroplaning and makes for a slick surface that affects stopping times, but, being a Kent auto crash attorney I have come to realize that there is an even higher danger in the reduced visibility we experience in rain storms.

In the downpour that covered the Seattle area Wednesday, December 10th two vehicles ended up driving into the Puget Sound’s frigged waters. A couple was driving a van to Anthony’s Restaurant for dinner when they made a wrong turn near 1000 Marine View Drive. The incorrect turn sent them onto a boat ramp which they mistook for a road, and with the poor visibility they were not able to see the end of the ramp and drove off into the water. Their son was following behind in a Lexus SUV, when he received a call from his parents that they had driven into the water. The son, in shock, drove off the next boat ramp over.

Luckily, a Puget Sound security guard saw the accidents and handed the Lexus driver a multi tool to break out the windows of the van and they were able to remove the couple from the sinking vehicle. All three were taken to the hospital, but suffered no serious injuries in the Seattle auto accident.

Though driving off a boat ramp is not a common auto accident, it goes to prove that the limited visibility in a rain storm can lead you to make some odd mistakes. It is important to pay attention to your surroundings and not speed in poor weather conditions so you may have time to react to the situations that may arrive.
