Cell Phone Ban for Florida Officers | Seattle Car Crash Attorney
Every day, drivers across the country put as all at risk when they talk or text on the road. As a Seattle car accident lawyer and Washington personal injury attorney, and the founder of Teens against Distracted Driving, I believe no one should be driving with these distractions. So far, twenty states have passed cell phone bans. Florida is still considering passing a bill that will make it illegal to use handheld cell phones while driving. However, just this week, the Zephyrhills Police Department instituted a new policy forbidding on-duty police officers from using cell phones while on patrol. According to Tampa Bay Online, Captain Jeff McDougal of the department believes officers have enough to worry about while on duty. They need to be paying attention to their computer and radio instead. Many states have been passing bans in the past year. In January, the National Safety Council released a report stating that an estimated 28% of all traffic accidents are caused by the use of a cell phone. This translates to about 1.6 million crashes each year. There have also been studies showing that texting while driving is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. It is a very dangerous driving distraction that causes traffic accidents each day. We urge all drivers to think twice before using a cell phone while driving.
