Clemson University Researchers Develop Voice System to Prevent Hands-On Texting While Driving and Reduce Distracted Driving Auto Accidents | Seattle Car Accident Lawyer
A team of researchers at Clemson University’s Human Centered Computing Division recently developed an alternative to texting while driving. They created a system called VoiceTEXT that lets drivers speak text messages that they want to send through their phones. This system allows the driver to keep both of their hands on the wheel and both eyes on the road while still being able to send their text or emails at the same time. It is hoped that this will reduce the spate of distracted driving and texting while driving car accidents that are causing serious personal injury and wrongful deaths. All drivers have to do is attach their cell phones to an in-car hands-free system. Then, before they start their cars and hit the road they set the system to ‘vocal’ mode. The phone is then connected to a central server which gives you the power to speak your message. The recording is then converted into an email, a voicemail, or turned into a text message using speech recognition and conversion software. Text messages received by a phone connected to the system will be read aloud to the driver using the same speech software. The team is currently attempting to get licenses from Verizon, Google, OnStar and other service providers. While VoiceTEXT will not completely or immediately solve all of the problems with texting and driving, it is definitely a step in the right direction. Even though many states have banned the act, and others are attempting to do the same, individuals young and old alike have admitted that the distracted driving laws do not stop them from using their phones behind the wheel. Many people simply can’t help themselves and need to read or respond to that new message that just came in. They can’t wait until it is safe. The ability to be able to speak your messages and have the incoming ones read to you could be extremely useful. Drivers will still be able to communicate but they will be able to do so at a much safer level. Check out Teens Against Distracted Driving for more information on texting while driving.
