The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and AAA Minnesota/Iowa are doing something to prevent car accidents because of texting while driving. The two groups are reaching out to teenagers to help spread the word and create awareness about the dangers of texting while driving. Minnesota teenagers in grades 9-12 are eligible to enter the Don’t Text and Drive, Teens! TV Commercial Challenge. The contest calls for the teenagers to create a 30 second television advertisement that shows the dangers of texting while driving as well as solutions and things we can do to help stop the dangerous habit and prevent car accidents.

The winners will be chosen by online voting as well as the Department of Public Safety and AAA Minnesota/Iowa. The winning teen will have their commercial televised in the spring of 2010 as well as be awarded $1000; 2nd place will receive $600 and third place will win $400.

The youth traffic safety coordinator of the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety says the contest gives teenagers the “opportunity to deliver a positive, life-saving message so their friends get their thumbs off the phone and back on the wheel.”

It is great to see more and more organizations doing their part to put an end to distracted texting while driving. Distracted driving causes hundreds of car accidents and injuries and the more people become aware of the dangers, hopefully the more people will stop the dangerous habit. Please never text and drive.

Rules and entry forms for the contest are can be found at www.rockthebelt.org. You can also find more information about distracted driving at the website I have created, TeensAgainstDistractedDriving.com, which is dedicated to ending the dangerous combination of texting while driving.
