Drunk driving is the number 1 cause of fatal auto accidents. In fact, drunk drivers are responsible for 37 percent of fatal car crashes. Legislation such as the Drive Hammered Get Nailed program have taken strides to reduce the number of drunk driving fatalities.

November 25- January 2nd 14 police departments participated in the Drive Hammered Get Nailed campaign and increased drunk driving patrols with grant money from the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission. The program lead to 3,577 drunk driving arrests, taking those drunk drivers off the road before they injured themselves or other drivers.

Participants included police departments in Buckley, Bonny Lake, Fife, Fircrest, DuPont, Puyallup, Lakewod, Gig Harbor, Orting, Sumner, Milton, University Place, Steilacoom, Tacoma and the Washington State Patrol and Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

Drunk driving laws have been getting steadily more strict, but it still continues to be a big problem throughout the United States. Drunk driving has some frightening statistics:

60 percent of teen auto accident fatalities are the result of drunk driving
At night 10% of drivers are over twice the legal limit

Drunk drivers are more likely to be in a serious accident than to be arrested

In 2008 drunk drivers took 38,000 lives

Half the drunk driving battle is refraining from driving intoxicated yourself and preventing your friends from driving drunk. Be responsible, have a designated driver or take a taxi and make sure you take the keys from friends if they have been drinking. Also if you see another driver displaying signs of intoxication- report them to police.
