Driving under the influence of alcohol is irresponsible and extremely dangerous. As a Seattle auto accident attorney, one of my goals is to make the dangers of drinking and driving known to everyone who gets behind the wheel of an automobile. Statistics show, that of the 37,261 accident related fatalities in 2008, 13,846 were alcohol related–that’s 37% of the total deaths on the road. While this is a lower percentage than it has been in the past, it is still far too high. Drinking and driving is 100% preventable, and hopefully with greater education, we will see this number continue to decrease.

A head-on collision occurred near Olympic National Park last Sunday night after a Dodge Ram crossed the centerline of highway 101. The driver of the Dodge Ram 1500, 56-year-old Bruce Hebner, was believed to be under the influence of alcohol when his vehicle drifted into the lane of oncoming traffic. 49-year-old Antoinette Barragan of Forks, WA was driving a Ford Ranger Westbound when she collided with the Ram. She sustained multiple broken bones while her son, who was sitting in the passenger seat, appeared to be uninjured. Barragan was transported by ambulance to Olympic Medical Center and then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center for further treatment.

Negligent driving is the cause for most of the accidents on the road. Becoming drowsy behind the wheel, distracted driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol are just a few of the causes for fatal auto accidents that happen every day all over the United States. When someone drives under the influence, they are putting the lives of themselves and everyone else on the road in jeopardy. If you ever encounter a driver that appears to be intoxicated, please be sure to report them for the safety of others.
