The dangers of drunk driving have been flooding the media, driver’s education courses and even our roadways and billboards for decades, but still drunk drivers plague the streets. Being a car accident attorney in Bellevue and Bellevue motorcycle accident attorney I am all too familiar with the statistics- 10% of all drivers at night are over the legal limit, and 50% of all fatal auto accidents at night are the result of an intoxicated driver. Weekends are typically viewed as having the most drunk drivers, a Seattle drunk driving accident this week, however, shows that week days can be just as dangerous.

Monday morning, November 8th, an accident occurred just outside of Seattle. It was 2:40 am when a Ford Explorer drove off the road on the 3900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The driver of the Explorer crashed into a bus shelter. After the collision, the driver continued to accelerate back onto the road where he spun out of control and came to a rest in the middle of northbound traffic. The driver of the explorer was ejected from the vehicle and taken to Harborview Medical Center to be treated for life-threatening injuries. There was also a female adult in the passenger seat that sustained minor cuts and bruises.

While the number of alcohol related fatalities in the United States has decreased in recent years, the dangers of encountering a drunk driver are still relevant. During the upcoming holiday season, with parties and alcohol consumption, it is particularly important to make good decisions and drive responsibly. In order to avoid a DUI accident, follow these simple tips

  • Bring a designated driver to parties. Having someone plan to drive you home can lessen the risk of making an impaired decision once it’s too late.
  • Be cautious. If you’re not sure if you’ve had too much to drink, then play it safe. Wait it out or pass the keys to someone who has not been drinking.
  • Look after others. If you see someone with keys that shouldn’t have them, then don’t be afraid to intervene.
