An Aberdeen drunk driving accident has claimed the life of a 6-year-old girl and left her grandmother facing vehicular homicide charges. On Tuesday, December 28th the 52-year-old woman was driving in Aberdeen, Washington when she veered off the road, overcorrected and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Neither the driver nor her 6-year-old daughter, Kihna Howard, were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident and were ejected from the vehicle. The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, which were non-life-threatening – the little girl, however, was killed. The occupants of the truck were uninjured.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene the 52-year-old driver showed signs of intoxication and a blood sample was taken which may leave the woman facing vehicular homicide charges if they come back positive for alcohol.

The tragedy of this event is heightened by the driver’s failure to follow some very basic laws: drunk driving laws and seat belt safety laws. This one night of irresponsibility claimed the life of a young girl who barley had a chance to experience life. Drunk driving accidents claim thousands of innocent lives every year and 60% of all fatal auto accident victims were not wearing a seatbelt.
