Drunk driving warnings flood the television and radio, and mark our roadways with sad reminders of those who have fell victim to a person driving under the influence. Still, drunk driving is a big problem that claims thousands of innocent lives every year. Working as a Kent car accident attorney and Kirkland wrongful death lawyer I face the victims of these heinous crimes everyday and see what toil drunk driving accidents can take on a life.

New information has been released on the Seattle pedestrian accident from Thursday, October 28th. As described in our previous blog posting, 5 pedestrians were struck by a vehicle as they crossed the street in the 1700 block of 1st Avenue South in downtown Seattle.

The driver, 43-year-old Juanita Wright, was speeding down the street towards a cross walk filled with 7 pedestrians. Wright hit the pedestrians and her car arrived at a stop 48 feet after the crosswalk. Her car was reportedly filled with partially empty and empty beer cans and a pack of beer was found next to Wrights feet. The two passengers in Wrights vehicle also appeared to be intoxicated.

Wright did not pass field sobriety test administered shortly after the accident and was found to have a blood alcohol content of .29% which is significantly higher than the .08% legal limit.

Four of the seven pedestrians were hospitalized due to injuries from the car accident. A 28-year-old female suffered a severe brain injury which resulted in partial removal of her skull to relieve swelling. Two of the victims are still in Harborview Medical Center’s ICU, and another has been listed in satisfactory condition.

Juanita Wright is an unemployed teacher with a criminal past. In 1990 she was charged with a DUI which has never been resolved. She has also been convicted of theft under the alias Juanita Mars. Wright is currently being held for vehicular assault and has a $250,000 bail for her release.

Do your part to make the roads safer and always be sure to have a reliable way home when you are drinking. Making sure you have a designated driver or simply taking a taxi or bus is a lot better than facing charges for a vehicular homicide.
