For the past few months, I‘ve been visiting Washington state high schools warning students about the dangers of using cell phones while driving. As a Seattle personal injury attorney and the founder of Teens Against Distracted Driving, I have seen countless Washington car accidents caused by using cell phones or texting devices.

With the recent handheld cell phone ban, we should be seeing fewer auto accidents caused by distracted drivers. However, recent studies are now suggesting that the new law is not actually making much of a difference.

According to the Institute for Highway Safety, conversations are the real problem. They believe that in order to really prevent these auto accidents, the law should ban all phone use, including the use of all hands-free devices.

So far, Maryland is the only state to initiate a full cell phone ban.

This may be the next step toward making our roadways safer. In the United States, we see thousands of auto accidents each year. And, about 80 percent of these accidents are caused by distracted and inattentive drivers.
