Want to reduce wrongful death, serious injury, auto accident, and motorcycle accident cases in Washington? I’ve got a plan, and I’m sure it won’t be popular with some, including my own children!

Washington should raise the minimum driving age from 16 to 18. Those of you who know 16 year-olds will probably agree that 16 is too young to grasp the tremendous power and responsibility that comes with driving on our public roads. I think back to some of the things I did when I was 16 and 17, and I can tell you first hand that I had no business driving. I was putting others at risk almost daily. It wasn’t until I had time to mature that I understood exactly how catastrophic my actions could have been. I am fortunate that in all of my hijinks I never injured or killed anyone, but many families in Washington are not so fortunate.

While I’m at it, what makes 18 the right age? Probably nothing. Truthfully, I don’t think I really became a safe driver until my early 20′s. However, that may be taking it too far. If an 18 year old can vote and go to a foreign land and die fighting for our country, then I think it would be wrong to tell them they weren’t mature enough to drive.

I don’t know if any lawmakers will ever take what I am saying seriously, but I imagine that if we all stopped to think about it for a second that most would agree. 16 is too young to drive.
