Riding a motorcycle, no matter how experienced you are or how careful you are is dangerous. But when you are riding a motorcycle and speeding or driving recklessly, your chances of getting seriously injured or possibly dying in a motorcycle accident skyrocket. As a Washington State motorcycle accident lawyer working at a Seattle personal injury law firm I have seen plenty tragic motorcycle accidents that left the rider with serious personal injuries. When you are involved in a motorcycle accident there is nothing you can do to protect yourself from being seriously hurt. Unlike a car, which takes most of the impact your bike does not act like a shield.

22-year-old killed on motorcycleA 22-year-old man from Wisconsin died early this morning because he lost control of his bike while he was riding through Lacey. The rider, whose name has not yet been released, was wearing a helmet, but even with the protection of his helmet the injuries he sustained were too severe and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Washington State Patrol believes that speed was the main factor in this fatal accident, but they are still investigating whether or not drugs or alcohol played a role. But even if the young man wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding on a motorcycle in the dark is incredibly dangerous and not worth the rush of exhilaration I’m sure he felt before he lost control.

Motorcyclists are at a much higher risk of being injured in an accident and more than 80% of motorcycle accidents result in the rider or their passenger being critically injured. Now that the sun has finally started to come out, riders will be more likely to get out on the road to enjoy the weather. But along with that, drivers and motorcycle riders are more likely to speed and drive recklessly when the weather is nice. As tragic as this accident is, I can only hope that motorcycle riders will realize that this man’s death could have been avoided if he hadn’t been speeding.
