Here we are again; another holiday season is behind us, and another new year rapidly approaches. During this time of religious observances of various faiths as well as secular celebrations, I love the fact that people have so many reasons to get together with family and friends. The Washington State Patrol has issued a press release about safety this New Year’s Weekend. The release focuses on planning ahead. In many cases, people drive drunk after an evening when they weren’t planning to be drinking, or weren’t planning to be driving, but “something came up.” I would join the state patrol in urging everyone to plan for what they will be doing. Some tips that they offer:

Have a designated driver
Plan to spend the evening somewhere that you can spend the night
Call someone to give you a ride
Call a cab

Organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving spend tremendous amounts of time and money spreading information about the problem, as well as offering solutions and alternatives. This New Year’s Eve, please make sure that you are not part of that problem: if you are planning to drink, use one of these tips, or host a party at your own home, where you can also offer a place for your guests to spend the night.
