During my career as a Seattle car accident attorney and Bellevue personal injury lawyer, I have seen many catastrophic traffic collisions in Washington and around the globe. I am regularly reminded of how dangerous the roads can be.

On Friday, two-time Olympic champion Natalia Lavrova was killed in a car accident in Russia. The accident occurred near the town of Penza, southeast of Moscow.

Lavrova’s sister was driving the vehicle when it crashed Friday. According to Kiro 7 News, both women died instantly in the impact.

Natalia Lavrova, 25, was a two-time Olympic gold medal champion gymnast, competing in both the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2004 Athens Olympics.

She was a rhythmic gymnast from the age of five. In 1998, she joined the Russian team. After competing in the Olympics, she went on to coach Dynamo Club and helped train Russia’s national team. We are very sorry to hear of this tragic loss.

Unfortunately, people are killed in auto accidents every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were an estimated 33,963 traffic fatalities in 2009. And, this number accounts for the United States alone. Once again, I urge all drivers to drive carefully. Please, obey all traffic laws and speed limits.
