Pedestrian Struck in Parking Lot
The number of pedestrian auto accident cases that come through my office as an Auburn pedestrian accident lawyer is unbelievable. The fact of the matter is that there is a large number of pedestrian collisions nationwide. Statistics recorded by The National highway Traffic Safety Administration show that there were 4,378 pedestrians killed in 2008 in the United States involving car accidents. Just 10 years before that, there were 5,228 pedestrian fatalities recorded. As these statistics indicate, there has been a dramatic 16% decrease in the number of pedestrian fatalities, but decreasing statistics is not good enough until the number of pedestrian deaths is down to zero. Recently, there was a serious pedestrian accident in Auburn. A 66-year old man was standing in a parking lot on the 900 block of Auburn Way South near the Donut Star. A car driving erratically swerved into the parking lot and struck the unsuspecting victim. The driver was arrested for possible vehicular assault while the 66-year-old pedestrian was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition. Fortunately, the injuries that he sustained were not life-threatening. With the number of auto accidents involving pedestrians on the decline, it is more important than ever to exercise extreme caution in areas with a high likelihood of people crossing the street. Roads near schools and within residential neighborhoods are usually marked at 25mph for the safety of the pedestrians. Drivers must be wary of indications that there are people walking about. Schools generally release students at around 3:00pm and weekends are often a busy time of day in residential areas. When coming across a crosswalk, drivers should scan both sides of the road to see if there are pedestrians looking to cross the street. Taking very simple safety precautions can help reduce the number of pedestrian-auto accidents every year in the United States.
