Being a Seattle car accident attorney I see the great devastation brought to the victims and families involved in auto accidents. Because of this I started Teens Against Distracted Driving, in order to take a stand against the growing distractions people find to occupy themselves with while behind the wheel. Texting while driving has become a grave problem in recent years and articles about its danger have flooded the media. In fact, Recently, a car and driver study showed that texting while driving is actually more hazardous than drinking and driving (see our blog texting while driving worse than drinking and driving).

In spite of all of the press and the recent legislation citing texting while driving a primary offense and ticket-able in quite a few states this habit continues to haunt our roadways making them unsafe. Thousands of people die in car accidents every year and with a great portion of the public insisting on texting, tweeting and emailing behind the wheel these numbers will only continue to grow.

Dr. Frank Ryan was killed Monday August 16th when his car veered off the highway and over a cliff. The accident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway in California. It has been confirmed that Dr. Ryan was tweeting about his border collie dog, which was riding alongside him in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Dr. Ryan was a popular plastic surgeon among the starts and had recently done the extensive work on Reality TV star, Heidi Montag.

It is always horrible to lose someone to a horrible car accident such as this and it rings true that in order to make the roadways safer we need to spread awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. I started Teens Against Distracted Driving over a year ago in order to help make these dangers well know to teenagers. Sadly, it takes horrible instances such as this to make people realize the sincere dangers of texting behind the wheel. Hopefully people will look at this sad accident and realize that though their social life may seem important at the time—it can wait! A text message or tweet is never worth the ultimate sacrifice—your life.

Losing a family member or friend is a difficult experience. Whether in a car accident or not, the last thing that you and your family want to have to deal with is legal issues and complications. Because I believe so strongly in this, I have written book with attorney Patrick J. Kang entitled ‘In Case of Death: Straight Talk on Washington Wrongful Death. We have made this book available free to Washington residents and it can be found by clicking the link above.
