Working as a Lakewood car accident lawyer and handling Tacoma personal injury settlements for several years I have seen both cars and drivers mangled by high-speed auto accidents. The high impact can send both car and body parts flying and face the driver with horrific injuries. Luckily, a police chase that ripped a car in half has had little impact on the driver.

A police chase led to a Lakewood car crash the morning of Tuesday, December 28th. The accident occurred in Lakewood, Washington at 3900 100th St. SW. A police officer saw a 1993 Honda which had been reported stolen and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The driver of the stolen vehicle, however, gave chase, eluding police officers.
The car struck a curb while speeding away from the police which launched the Honda into the air where it flew into a tree. The car crashed with such great force that the car actually split in half. Amazingly, the driver did not sustain any life-threatening injuries in the accident.

The driver, Mark A. Mertz, had apparently stolen the car from the driver at knife-point just before 11 am. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries and has been booked into jail for eluding a police officer and armed robbery of a vehicle.
