Last Thursday in separate auto incidents, an 18 year-old Union Gap man and a 69 year-old Yakima woman were both hospitalized after being struck by moving vehicles while trying to cross the road. Neither pedestrian suffered serious personal injuries.

The first pedestrian auto accident occurred around 4:15 PM when the Yakima pedestrian was struck by a Hyundai Elantra after stepping into it’s path. She was taken to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital and was released the next day in good condition.

The second accident occurred around 5:40 PM and was also the result of a pedestrian attempting to cross the street into oncoming traffic when he shouldn’t have been doing so. After finding the pedestrian lying unconscious in the road, he was taken to the hospital and checked for back injuries. He was released a short time later.

While both pedestrians thankfully ended up being ok, police said they will both be receiving tickets for improperly attempting to cross the street.

These accidents both occurred during heavy traffic times and also when the sun begins to go down and the roads become dark. The combination of those two things means that pedestrians must use extra caution when crossing the street. Use lighted crosswalks when you can and make sure to always cross the street legally in order keep yourself safe.
