Serious Auto Accident and Injuries Caused by Unsecure Load | Seattle Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Lawyer
At around 5:50 PM on New Year’s Eve in the westbound lanes of I-90 in Preston, Washington, a serious car accident was caused by an unsecure load that fell out of a truck. The injured individual, who was driving a 2007 Ford Focus, swerved out of the way to avoid the tarp that was in the middle of road. The attempted emergency manuever caused the driver to lose control of their Ford Focus and roll over crashing into the center median. The driver was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the crash and was being treated for serious personal injuries. Driving with an unsecure load is extremely dangerous. Not only are you acting irresponsibly but you are also endangering many lives, including your own. With cars traveling at such high speeds it is very difficult to have to stop or steer clear from an unexpected object that suddenly appears in the middle of the road. In July, 2005, a law known as “Maria’s Law” came into effect. After an incident where a woman named Maria Federici had a large piece of particle board smash through her windshield and severely damage her face when a man failed to properly secure his loaded U-Haul, it became a gross misdemeanor if an unsecured load causes an injury or death. If the obvious risk of injuring an innocent individual wasn’t enough to prevent one from driving with an unsecure load, then consider that someone who violates this law could face a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine. So please, think before you load things onto a vehicle or into a truck. If an item is not secure, it is your duty to make sure that it becomes secure and will not fall out of your automobile at any time. We wish a full and speedy recovery for the injured victim of this New Year’s Eve accident.
