Should the Law be Stricter on Young Drivers? | Seattle Car Accident Attorney
As a Washington car accident lawyer, Bellevue personal injury attorney, and the founder of Teens against Distracted Driving, I have seen many accidents involving inexperienced drivers. It is no surprise that teenagers cause thousands of traffic accidents each year. But are harsher laws the answer? I think so, in fact I even came up with a controversial plan to reduce auto accidents. On Tuesday, NY Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand proposed a bill that will instigate harsher driving restrictions for teens. The bill will extend the age for a full driver’s license to 18-years-old. Compared to other states, New York already has some harsh driving restrictions. However, Gillibrand thinks more government action is required to help prevent the number of auto accidents caused by young drivers. If the bill becomes law, drivers under the age of 18 will be under much closer watch. Most nighttime driving will be restricted and they will no longer be allowed more than one non-family passenger under the age of 21. Under the bill, cell phone use will also be restricted. These are only a few of the changes Gillibrand is advocating. Under the bill, teens who commit a traffic offense will need to wait longer to receive a full driver’s license. All these restrictions, will certainly limit the damage teens can cause on the road. However, there are still things to consider. How will the bill impact working parents? Also, lawmakers should consider how the new restrictions will be enforced and whether or not it will make a difference.
