SPD Commercial Vehicle Safety Checks | Seattle Commercial Vehicle Accident Attorney
As a Seattle commercial vehicle accident attorney, I know how serious an accident involving a vehicle with the size and weight of a commercial truck can be. The size and weight of semi-trucks and other commercial vehicles is so much greater than other vehicles on the road that in a collision, occupants of car or small truck often just don’t stand a chance. A new Seattle Police Department unit called the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Squad (CVES) has been inspecting commercial vehicles for possible safety violations. Given the potential for horrific injury if these vehicles are involved in accidents, I’m glad to see the city taking safety seriously. According to a media release issued yesterday, SPD conducted inspections of six commercial trucks on Tuesday. Five of the six rigs were documented with safety violations for brakes, with two of those five being taken out of service with catastrophic brake failure. Four of the six vehicles had lighting violations as well. All violations were reported to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, where they will count as “strikes” against the owner and operator of the vehicle, as well as the trucking company. Commercial Vehicles represent an incredible potential for harm in a wreck, and the owners and drivers of these vehicles need to take that potential very seriously. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, every year thousands of Americans die in commercial vehicle accidents, with tens of thousands of injuries and billions of dollars in property damage. The fact is, if a semi-truck hits a car, a building, or a pedestrian, the damage will probably be incredible. The best way to prevent this kind of damage and danger is to ensure that these trucks are properly and safely equipped on the road.
