Study Shows Adults Text and Talk While Driving | Seattle Personal Injury Attorney

As a Seattle car accident attorney and the founder of Teens Against Distracted Driving, I know how dangerous it is to text and drive. At least 80 percent of auto accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Popular belief claims that teenagers are the main culprits of this dangerous habit. However, the results of a recent survey released Friday, suggest otherwise.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, adults surprisingly text and drive more that teens. The 2010 poll shows that an astonishing 47% of adults admit to texting behind the wheel.

The study also claims that many more adults than teens talk on cell phones while driving. A considerable 75 percent of adults do this compared to only 52 percent of teens. These numbers make sense when you consider that adults are more likely to do business over the phone throughout the day.

Many also say they’ve been passengers in vehicles driven by a driver distracted by text messaging. At least 44 percent of adults and 40 percent of teens have been in this situation.

So far, 28 states have made it illegal to text and drive.
