Texting and Driving Becomes a Primary Offense in Washington | Seattle Car Accident Lawyer
As a Seattle car accident lawyer and Seattle personal injury attorney, I’ve encountered many distracted driving car accident cases where cell phone use was primarily to blame. Thankfully, State lawmakers are now prepared to treat the offense more seriously. On Friday, Governor Christine Gregoire signed a bill into law making the use of a handheld cell phone while driving a primary offense. In Washington, talking or texting while driving has been regarded as only a secondary offense, meaning offenders could only be pulled over if they were being cited for speeding or another violation as well. Starting June, the new law will take effect meaning texting while driving will cost you a $124 ticket. It is about time Washington state lawmakers began treating this driving distraction seriously. Texting significantly reduces a driver’s reaction time and significantly raises the potential for auto accidents. It is also important to ensure that the young drivers on our roads to not partake in this dangerous habit.
