Texting and driving causes countless Seattle area car accidents, but what about other areas? A recent blog post demonstrated the dangers of driving and texting. James Ballidis, a California personal injury lawyer, wrote of a driver that struck a pedestrian in the crosswalk of his city Newport Beach, California. Only moments before, the driver was texting on his cell phone. He had apparently been texting for over 30 minutes before the accident.

The danger to pedestrians is obvious, but the devestation to the driver is very real as well. Martin Burt Kuehl, is to stand trial for vehicular manslaughter. A witness to the accident said that the driver behind Kuehl had to honk to alert him to the green light. Texting while driving is illegal according to attorney Ballidis.

Distracted driving is a factor in nearly 80 percent of traffic accidents and 12 percent of traffic fatalities. That is why I have launched a new initiative to increase awareness about the dangers of texting and driving. My goal is to raise awareness and put a visible reminder not to text and drive on every wrist in America. We are doing this by giving away orange bracelets (kind of like the Livestrong bracelets that Lance Armstrong did) to anybody who signs the pledge to not text and drive. That way, when they go to send a text, hopefully they will see the bracelet and put the phone down. It may save their life.
