It is tragic anytime a car accident causes a wrongful death . It is even more tragic, however, when that death is senseless and caused by negligent behavior that is so easily preventable. In Anderson, South Carolina, a 36 year old man died in a head on collision car accident. Troy Eugene Smith was driving on U.S. 178, when his ’98 Ford minivan collided with a 2006 Mitsubishi.

The 20 year old woman driving the Mitsubishi admitted that she was texting when her car drifted into the wrong lane. The woman suffered only minor injuries. Unfortunately, Smith died last Friday at the scene of the car accident.

According to Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore, Smith was wearing a seatbelt at the time and was trapped inside the car. His girlfriend was a passenger during the crash, but escaped with only minor personal injuries.

It is a tragic accident that demonstrates the grave risks drivers take while texting. Not only does texting while driving endanger the person texting, but it puts everyone and anyone who is unlucky enough to be on the road at the same time at grave risk. Again and again, it costs the lives of innocent victims. We offer our condolences to the victim’s family.

Studies have shown that, on average, someone who is texting while driving takes their eyes of the road for 4.6 seconds at a time. At driving speeds that is an eternity. At freeway speeds someone texting while driving will travel the length of a football field with their eyes off the road! It isn’t surprising that such behavior makes those who text and drive 26 times more likely to be in an accident than those who do not engage in this careless behavior. That is why I have launched a nationwide movement to end texting and driving once and for all. It is called Teens Against Distracted Driving. Please visit the pledge page and take the pledge to NT TXT N DRV. Then encourage everyone you know to do the same.
