As a Seattle car accident attorney, Bellevue personal injury lawyer, and the founder of Teens Against Distracted Driving, I always look for ways to encourage safe, responsible driving. Last year, 492 people were killed in Washington State traffic accidents and many more were injured. This Thursday, we can all help make the roads safer by participating in Drive Nice Day.

The day is meant to raise awareness about the dangers of irresponsible driving and to hopefully prevent a few collisions.

This year, the focus is primarily on teen drivers and cell phone use. According to their website, www.driveniceday.org, 80 percent of traffic collisions are caused by distracted or inattentive drivers.

With texting and cell phone use on the rise, distracted driving has become a big problem in Washington State. However, all that will soon change. Beginning June 10th, the use of a cell phone while driving will be treated as a primary offense in our state. And, drivers better be prepared for the new law because there will be no grace period. Officers are ready to start ticketing offenders right away.

We are all responsible for the safety of our roadways. So, please drive carefully and be cautious of other drivers. We must all do our part to help lower the number of auto accidents in Washington State.
