By now, we should all realize how dangerous texting and driving is. Texting and driving, and other types of distracted driving, are a huge cause of Seattle auto accidents, Seattle truck accidents, and all sorts of personal injury claims throughout Washington. While laws to ban the activity are hot topics in State Legislatures across the United States, people will still not resist the urge to pick up their phone even if after it becomes illegal in their home town. Here are a few tips to help you stop the habit and resist the temptation to pick up your phone when you are behind the wheel. By following these tips you can do your part to help make our roads safer by reducing car accidents.

-Perhaps the most simple and obvious advice, keep your phone turned off and out of reach when in the car. This way you still have the device if you need it for an emergency and you won’t be tempted to check your texts and emails. I have even heard of people who put their phone in the back seat when they get in the car, that way they won’t be tempted to check it.
-If you insist on being able to answer phone calls, use a Bluetooth headset and set your phone off to the side. This will allow you to be able to answer your phone just using the Bluetooth technology. It is still unclear whether this will actually reduce your chances of being in, or causing, an auto accident, but at least you will have both hands on the wheel.

-If you are in the middle of a text conversation with someone, let them know that you are about to get in your car to drive and that you will text with them when you get out of your car.

-If you absolutely must call someone or send or read a text, pull over to the side of the road. If on the freeway, get off at the nearest exit.

-Finally, if you are a parent of a child, or a role model to someone, lead by example. If you stress that it is not okay to text while driving, then they will have a better chance of driving text free.
