The stereotype, and perhaps even evidence to back it up, has been there for years; teenage boys are the more dangerous and risky drivers. Insurance companies have always showed their support of this belief as the rates they charged for male teenagers have been higher than those for females. Yet new studies are showing that the dangerous driving behavior gap between teenage males and females is getting smaller. Allstate compiled statistics and data and created a “State of Teen Driving Report.” Among the interesting findings were that female teens admitted to acting aggressively, speeding, and texting behind the wheel more often than males did.

In the past, insurance companies have charged male teenagers twice as much as they have charged females. Today, proof of the gap closing can be seen in the fact that males are on average paying between 20 and 30 percent more than females are paying for insurance.

One of the big things that stood out in the Allstate report was that one in four girls admitted to texting while driving compared to only 15 percent of boys.

One teen admitted that it is hard for her to ignore, or wait to get to a stoplight to read a text message she may receive. She said, “I know it’s not safe because there’s proof with all the crashes and everything, but it’s one of those things you don’t think much of or you think you still have some control over.”
