Monday morning, January 4th, four individuals were sent to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a serious car accident. A small sedan was driving northbound through an ‘uncontrolled intersection’ when it was hit by a van. The sedan was hit so hard it spun around into another lane leading it to be hit again by a second van. Inside of the sedan were two adults and two children. Both of the children, including one who’s car seat was thrown from their sedan, were taken to Harborview along with one of the adults with serious life-threatening personal injuries. The drivers of the two vans did not suffer any injuries.

These “uncontrolled intersections” have neither signs nor traffic signals that indicate which driver has the right-of-way. Clearly, these intersections can prove to be very dangerous and this danger is the reason why traffic circles are being deployed more and more in our communities. If you know you are approaching a four-way intersection you should do so with caution. Remember the rules of the road. If you are not sure who has the right of way, you should slow down enough to stop. Speeding through them in order to shed 15 seconds off of your commute is not even close to being worth the risk.
