“STRAIGHT TALK LAW” BLOG: UNEXPECTED PERSONAL INJURY | Seattle Personal Injury Lawyer
By Jason Epstein Imagine tagging along on a doctor’s visit with your grandparents – and suddenly the floor you’re standing on gives way, causing you to fall 22 feet down to the next level. That’s just what happened to a lucky little four year-old girl in Kennewick, southeast of Seattle, Washington. Why do I say “lucky?” Read on. Four year-old Kara Freeman went along with her grandparents to a dermatologist appointment. She was standing by an elevator – on top of some temporary boarding that had been put down between the elevator and the floor. The board suddenly broke – it was only a quarter-inch thick – and little Kara found herself plummeting down to the floor below. Kara ended up walking away with only cuts and bruises. But she had an exciting day of it, when medical staff decided to fly her to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after being concerned about a spot that was on her neck. It turned out to be not a problem and Kara was released with a clean bill of health. But do you want to know why Kara was really lucky? Because there were similar boards on the floor below her – and they broke too, when she landed on them. But the impact pushed Kara forward so she didn’t fall through them as well. This is the kind of completely unexpected personal injury no one can prepare for – and can completely put a child’s caregivers in shock. Even though Kara appeared to be okay after the ordeal, her grandparents fortunately did the right thing and called emergency medical personnel. Sometimes personal injuries resulting from these kinds of accidents don’t make themselves apparent for hours or even days after the accidents take place. This is why medical workers had Kara strapped to a gurney for fourteen hours – so they could thoroughly check the little girl and make sure she was okay. When an unforeseen accident like this happens, make sure you contact emergency personnel immediately, even if the person appears to have escaped serious personal injury. And don’t be afraid to contact a Seattle personal injury attorney such as myself to see what your rights are in this kind of situation.
