Since 1997, 60% of car crash fatalities happened in collisions on rural roads. Most drivers think that going down a desolate road with little traffic is safer and doesn’t require as much attention as driving in a more populated area. Statistics show, however, that there are much more fatal auto accidents in rural areas than on urban roads.

On Thursday, November 4^th, Estela Carmona was driving east on Highway 522 in Monroe. It was late afternoon as her Honda Civic slowly drifted into the wrong lane. Immediately, she collided with another vehicle going westbound – killing her instantly. Her 2-year old son was sitting in the rear passenger seat and sustained multiple injuries. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition. The 50-year old driver of the other vehicle was also transported to the hospital with serious leg injuries.

Collisions like this one are horrible to hear about and could have easily been avoided. Unfortunately, Estela was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred, an lapse in judgment which claimed her life. Here are a few tips on how to drive safely on Washington rural roads and avoid situations like this one.

Always remember to wear a seatbelt. No matter how few cars there are on the road.
Drive the speed limit.
Follow appropriate protocol. Remember to check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. And always signal to inform other drivers of the lane change.

Drive within your limits. Take the conditions of the road and the weather into consideration. If you are feeling drowsy, pull over at a rest stop for a while.
