Drunk driving has been a big problem since cars first became popular – even before they exceeded 100 mph laws were passed prohibiting drunk driving. In spite of drunk driving laws, 37% of all fatal auto accidents are caused by drunk drivers. Working as a Kent car accident lawyer and Renton accident injury attorney I am in support of all new drunk driving legislation and hope that by increasing the consequences and patrols we can stop irresponsible DUI  accidents such as what occurred in Yakima this week.

Sunday, January 9th an 18-year-old man lost control of his vehicle and rolled his vehicle several times. The accident happened around 7:30 Sunday morning in Yakima, Washington at the 1700 block of Speyers Road. The 2008 Toyota Scion driven by Levi Redfield crashed along the side of the road and the driver was taken to Yakima Regional Medical Center and Cardiac Center to be treated for his injuries.

Speeding and drunk driving were determined the cause of the accident. Amazingly, Redfield, while not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle rolled over, did not sustain serious injuries. Redfield was arrested and charged with DUI after being released from the hospital.

Auto accidents are the leading cause of death for 15-23 year olds and sadly, 35% of these fatal auto accidents involved teen drinking. The United States has a zero-tolerance policy for drivers under the age of 21. This means, drivers under the age of 21 can be charged with a DUI for having any alcohol in their system. While this law was a great step to ending teen drunk driving accidents, there are still thousands killed every year because of drunk drivers. The best way to protect your teen is by simply talking to them and giving them the tools they need to make safer choices. Read the article “Teen Drunk Driving: Starting the Conversation” for more information on talking to your teen about drunk driving.
