Q. My boyfriend and I were in an automobile accident a few weeks ago. The other driver was at-fault (rear-ended us). Neither of us has medical insurance. We are both experiencing back pain/etc. and would like to get treatment, but do not have a Primary Care Physician and cannot afford the bills up front. I have a third-party claim with through the other-driver’s insurance policy. I do not have PIP on my own auto insurance. Is there a way to see a chiropractor or doctor without having to pay all of the medical fees up front? We plan to have the third-party insurance pay for the medical costs in the end. Do I need to get permission from the third-party insurance before seeing a doctor? Thanks in advance!

A. You are in a bind that many auto accident victims find themselves in. Without PIP coverage or health insurance, there is nobody to pay for your medical treatment in the short run. Sure, eventually the other party will probably have to pay, but that doesn’t help you now when you need to see the doctor to get some relief.

Many providers, especially chiropractors will treat you on a lien basis. That means that they agree to hold their bills until your case settles, and then get paid out of the settlement. Most providers that will do that will also require that you have an attorney represent you to be sure that your case is handled properly.
