What is a bulging disc?« Back to Frequently Asked QuestionsThe spinal column is made up of bones, called vertebrae, and cartilage in between the bones, called discs. The spinal cord runs the length of the spine and separates out at each level to control different body parts. The segments of the spine allow us to move our backs in both flexion and extension. Under normal conditions there is enough room for the spinal cord to operate without being compressed. When someone has a bulging disc, the cartilage stops looking like a cylinder and develops a bulge. That bulge may not be a problem, but if the bulge impinges on the nerves of the spinal cord, then it can cause all sorts of problems and pain. |
