What is a spinal fusion?

A spinal fusion surgery improves the stability of a person’s spine. A spine can become unstable for lots of reasons, i.e. disc disease or fracture. When the spine is unstable it can cause the vertebrae at one level to move laterally on the levels above and below. This can be a very dangerous situation. When the spine is unstable it is necessary to stabilize it by fusing two or more levels of the vertebrae together. This is often done by using bone screws, bone grafts, and metal hardware in the spine.
