Who is going to pay my medical bills?« Back to Frequently Asked QuestionsUltimately, when your case is settled your medical bills will be part of that settlement. That does not help, however, in the short term. The insurance company of the person who caused your injury will not, I repeat WILL NOT pay your medical bills as you get the treatment. There are two options for getting your medical bills paid as you get treatment. First, insurance companies in Washington are required to offer Personal Injury Protection, or PIP on all policies. PIP will pay for your medical expenses that are related to the accident up to the limits of the PIP policy (usually $10,000). Ask your insurance company if you have PIP. If they say you don’t, that might not be the end of the road. If they can’t prove that they strictly complied with the PIP law, then they have to give you PIP coverage even if you didn’t pay for it. This can get tricky, speak to a lawyer for help. Second, you can always use your health insurance coverage to get treatment. Under the law, if you don’t have PIP coverage, then your health insurance has to cover your medical treatment from an accident. |
