“Cash Cab”, a British program adapted for American and Canadian audiences, capitalizes on the formula of surprise. Random people flagging down taxis in big cities are picked up by the Cash Cab and are roped into a trivia game with cash as their prize. On July 15th, 2011, it was the driver of one such mock yellow taxi that was very much surprised, however, and ultimately he and the rest of the “Cash Cab” team would be very shaken.

After a long day of filming and producing, it was not the host of Vancouver’s “Cash Cab”, licensed taxi driver and comedian Adam Growe, who was behind the wheel of the cab. A member of the program’s technical staff drove the taxi back to the program’s storage facility, and as he journeyed through Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside district, he struck a pedestrian, injuring the 61-year-old man fatally.

As a Seattle personal injury lawyer who takes great personal interest in combating distracted driving, it is easy to blame the values purported by the program itself. For the audience of the show, the fact that the contestants and the host are still deeply embedded by traffic and crowds of people is easily forgotten. And, if the audience feels this way, it is not surprising that the people who work to produce “Cash Cab” also end up feeling the same. So while filming may not have occurred at the time of the accident, the driver may have been too relaxed that evening when the pedestrian accident occurred.

On the other hand, not enough information on the accident has been released, and pedestrian accidents are regrettably common in big cities. The automobile’s dual-use as a stage and as a means of transportation may have been only a sensational coincidence. At this time, Vancouver Police Constable Lindsey Houghton has publicly stated that no charges have been filed against Castlewood Productions Inc., which produces the “Cash Cab” in Canada.
